El Sol Goes Down
El Sol y La Luna was once a down-home SoCo TexMex institution: friendly, laid back with some of the best migas in town. The El Sol of 6th street is a pretentious, over designed, discoed out bar with an unmanageably sized menu and seriously poor quality control. Mark’s “fajitas” smelled funny and tasted worse. Rather than sizzling to our table on a lovely griddle they arrived with a whimper, whiffing of microwave. Not only did the meat taste awful the dish was accompanied by two stale store-bought tortillas. My floutas were overcooked, bland and uninspired. The only saving grace was the beans which had a lovely smoked flavor but tasted reheated rather than refried. One would hope that in this dizzying club atmosphere at that least the drinks would be good but we were less than impressed. First, Mark tried to order a Mexican Martini but was told it comes in a cup, not with a shaker (uncivilized I tell ya!) His second choice, a margarita was as sour as the inattentive servers. Staff appeared much more interested in talking to each other than actually waiting on customers. It isn’t a wonder the place was empty. Perhaps only the late crowd can stomach the ambiance and food, already used to strobe lights with palates numbed from boozing it up on 6th Street. Say goodbye to another Austin tradition, the sun has gone down on El Sol y La Luna.
